You can still find spuds in Stawell
THE humble potato has made national headlines lately following a major shortage due to less-than-ideal growing conditions in South Australia, where up to 80 per cent of Australia’s potatoes are grown. Heavy rainfall between April and June left paddocks across South Australia too wet to plant potato crops, with the knock-on effects of planting delays causing a shorter and smaller harvest window and smaller yields. Supermarket shelves that are usually filled with potatoes have been empty this week, however local wholesale and retail fresh food specialists, Rayner’s Fruit and Vegetables, have managed to keep stocks up during the shortage.
