The Moyston Drinking Water Project aims to transition the town from an untreated (non‑potable) water supply to a fully treated drinking water supply.

Moyston is currently supplied via the Mt Willam headworks system, which delivers non‑drinking water that does not meet Australian Drinking Water Guidelines.

After a tender process mid last year, Utilstra was awarded the contract to design and construct the pipeline and facility sites in September.

GWMWater Managing Director Mark Williams told the Advocate the local community will soon see work around the town as the project progresses.

"We’re now reaching an exciting phase of the Moyston Drinking Water Project, with pipes set to start going into the ground."
"Our contractor, Utilstra, have already progressed the design work and are now mobilising and establishing themselves on site."

"Excavation and pipe‑laying will begin in the coming weeks. Construction of the project’s new facilities, including the pump station at the Ararat Water Treatment Plant and the new water storage on Morocco Hill Road - is scheduled for the first half of 2026,” Mr Williams said.

In 2004, GWMWater completed a similar upgrade of the Elmhurst water supply, including a new solar powered filtration plant.

Since the completion of the project, water quality in Elmhurst has improved vastly according to local residents.
