Willaura windfall

AFTER years of planning and lobbying, the redevelopment of Willaura Hospital is about to commence, with funding confirmed for stage one of the project. East Grampians Health Service was successful in the latest round of the Regional Health Infrastructure Fund. The Victorian Government will provide funding for stage one of a three-stage redevelopment project, which includes replacement of five not fit for purpose hospital bedrooms with five new hospital bedrooms with single ensuites.

EGHS Board Chair Cameron Evans, Willaura Health Care Manager Liz Atkinson and EGHS Board Director Sybil Abbott-Burmeister (front L-R) jump for joy with Willaura Health Care staff after funding was announced for the redevelopment of the hospital.

EGHS Board Chair Cameron Evans said the announcement this week was well received.

“Everyone involved with Willaura Health Care is thrilled with the announcement that we can finally start work on the redevelopment of the hospital,” Mr Evans said.

“Our staff in Willaura are particularly excited, as are members of the Willaura community.

“The 1935 hospital building in Willaura has received very little upgrade since it was built and the redevelopment project will bring the campus into line with the standards required for care.”

Due to a delay in the funding announcement, there will be a review of the costings for the project and the funding amount EGHS will receive will then be announced.

While the exact amount to be allocated has not been determined, the Advocate believes it is several millions of dollars.

EGHS will now also apply for Federal Government funding towards this project.

Funding from the Victorian Government followed lobbying by Labor MP Jacinta Ermacora.

“East Grampians Health Willaura are successful applicants but the final figure is subject to Design, cost and scope clarification.

“I visited the hospital in Willaura on the 18th of February to discuss their needs.

“I am thrilled they have been successful. The Willaura hospital provides a wonderful local service to the community and provides employment for local health professionals,” she said.

EGHS was also successful with $545,187 RHIF funding for a new endoscopy system for theatre and $450,874 for the replacement of aquatherm pipes in the newer part of the hospital in Ararat.
