Wear a red poppy this Remembrance Day

RSL Victoria is encouraging people to purchase a red poppy in the lead up to Remembrance Day. Monday 11 November 2024 marks the anniversary of the Armistice that ended fighting with Germany in World War I, in 1918. Every year at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month, millions around the world pause in silence to remember the sacrifices many have made so we can enjoy life today.

Services will be held in Ararat, Willaura and Lake Bolac to mark the day.

Remembrance Day services have been scheduled for 11am in the three communities.

The poppy is known as the ‘Flower of Remembrance’, as they were among the first to flower in the battlefields of northern France and Belgium after the conflict ended.

Australia adopted this emblem in 1921 to honour the dead and help the living.

Remembrance Day poppies and badges are currently on sale outside Ritchies IGA, Woolworths and Bendigo Bank.

People can also buy a poppy from Fosters Mensland, Deb’s Diner, the Mess and Barracks, Mitre-10, Growmaster Grampians, the Leopold Hotel and Quick Cuts.
