Vandals tear up Beaufort oval
POLICE have been called to investigate damage at Beaufort’s Recreation Reserve where a car has driven through a fence and onto the oval. The incident is believed to have occurred overnight on Thursday the 20th of August. An unknown driver appears to have crashed through the boundary fence and then driven over the oval creating, damaging both the fence and the grass surface.
The Advocate was alerted to the damage by Beaufort Cricket Club President Andrew Oddie who was outraged by the damage caused.
Pyrenees Shire Council workers were assessing the oval on Friday when the Advocate called by.
In a statement, council said it was disappointed that the popular oval was targeted.
“Pyrenees Shire Council is disappointed by the recent vandalism at Beaufort's Goldfields Recreation Reserve, which has resulted in skid marks on the oval and damage to site fencing.
“Council has removed the damaged fencing and installed temporary barriers to ensure the area remains safe for users while further repairs are assessed. A report has also been made to Victoria Police.”
Mayor Cr Damian Ferrari said vandalism of community assets was frustrating and ultimately came at a cost to ratepayers.
"The Goldfields Recreation Reserve is a valued community facility enjoyed by local sporting clubs, families and visitors. Damage such as this detracts from the reserve’s amenity and creates an unnecessary expense for our community," Cr Ferrari said.
"We encourage anyone who may have witnessed the incident or has information to contact Victoria Police."
Council reminds residents to treat community facilities with respect so they can be enjoyed by everyone.
Police hope someone may have witnessed the incident and are appealing for witnesses or dashcam footage.
