Urban roads to be sealed

A number of local streets in Ararat township will be upgraded to a sealed standard this financial year as part of Ararat Rural City Council’s ongoing Urban Gravel to Seal Program. They include Alexandra Avenue (Queen Street to Vincent Street), Coral Street and McNeill Street and Maude Street (off Elizabeth Street), to be delivered in conjunction with the Ararat Pony Club Development.

Council is currently accepting tenders to seal Alexandra Avenue, one of a number of projects to be completed this financial year.

The Alexandra Avenue works package is currently out to tender, with works set to include upgraded parking, new kerb and channel, improved drainage, footpaths and pedestrian crossings.

The project will significantly enhance an area that services both residential properties and nearby public spaces.

Tenders close on 3 March 2026.

The selected roads rank highly on Council’s priority list, particularly in relation to residential access and community use.

Council says the sealing of the roads will enhance safety, reduce dust and give the roads a longer life.

CEO Dr Tim Harrison said unsealed roads in urban areas presented different challenges compared to rural gravel roads.

“Within our townships, unsealed roads experience higher traffic volumes, more pedestrian activity and greater residential density,” said Dr Harrison.

“Dust, drainage and surface deterioration don’t just affect vehicles, they impact nearby homes, public spaces and overall community surrounds. Sealing these roads reduces ongoing maintenance costs while improving safety and liveability for residents.”
