Top volunteers recognised at annual tourism awards
GRAMPIANS Wimmera Mallee Tourism (GWMT) has celebrated the region’s volunteer spirit at its 2026 Volunteer Summit and Recognition Awards held yesterday at Murtoa’s iconic Stick Shed. Among those recognised was Halls Gap’s Monique Cummings who was presented with an Outstanding Individual Contribution Award for her role in the annual Run The Gap fun run held each winter.

Bringing together volunteers, community groups, tourism operators, industry partners and local government representatives from across the Grampians and Wimmera Mallee, the summit recognised the vital role volunteers play in powering local communities, events and visitor experiences.
A key highlight of the day was the Volunteer Recognition Awards, with 29 outstanding nominations received from across the region, each showcasing remarkable stories of generosity, commitment and community spirit.
The popular Run the Gap fun run attracts thousands of participants each year and is a major economic stimulant for local businesses in the colder months.
The gold tourism award was presented to Dunkeld and Grampians Visitor Information Centre, with the silver award going to Nhill Aviation Heritage Centre and bronze to Speed Lions Club.
GWMT Chief Executive Officer Marc Sleeman said the awards highlighted the enormous impact volunteers have in shaping the region’s visitor economy and community life.
“Volunteers are the heartbeat of our region. Behind every great event, tourism experience and community initiative are passionate people giving their time, energy and expertise to make our communities stronger and more welcoming,” Mr Sleeman said.
The Summit also featured a keynote address from Geoff Sharp, CEO of Volunteering Victoria, who shared insights into the changing landscape of volunteering and the opportunities ahead to support stronger volunteer networks across regional Victoria.
