Stunning local garden opens this Sunday
13 Brewster Road Ararat is arguably the best garden in Ararat and local residents will have a chance to tour the property this weekend. Greg and Carolyn Gason will open their magnificent garden on Sunday afternoon to help raise funds for residents at the Ararat Retirement Village.
Greg and Carolyn purchased land in Brewster Road in the mid 1990s.
“We didn’t have a plan for the house at that stage, but we set about planting many of the conifers that we had growing in pots before that time, cedars, spruces and pines,” Carolyn said.
“The large English Oak, Ash tree, lemon scented gum and several sugar gums were already on the block of land and quite established. The only tree remaining is the large English Oak in the top corner of the block,” she said.
The Gasons built their home in Brewster Road in 1999.
“We set about planning and planting our garden out after we moved in.
“We love conifers and European trees and have tried to create a tapestry of colour and shape with the various conifers. I guess you would describe it as a woodland garden underplanted with various shrubs and perennial ground covers,” she said.
Carolyn admits a lot of work has gone into the Brewster Road garden with some success and some failure.
“We have learned many things about gardening over the last 26 years, some plants have thrived, some have died mainly because of lack of water.
“We have enjoyed creating our peaceful and beautiful space and like to share it with others.”
The Gason’s garden will be open from 1pm to 4pm this Sunday the 18th of October from 1pm to 4pm.
Admission is $15 per person which includes Devonshire tea.
All proceeds will support the Ararat Retirement Village Ladies Auxiliary and the projects they fund to assist older residents.
