Strong crowd celebrates Australia Day at Navarre
A strong show of community spirit was on display as approximately 60 people gathered to celebrate Australia Day in Navarre, enjoying a relaxed and welcoming morning filled with stories, reflection and connection. The celebrations began at 8.30am with a true Aussie barbecue that proved popular among locals. Long-time volunteers Mick Sammut and Chris Bibby once again took charge of the barbecue. Their efforts ensured the large crowd was well fed as the morning unfolded.
A cool breeze greeted attendees early, providing comfortable conditions before the temperature gradually rose. Many people took the opportunity to sit beneath the shade of the park’s trees, enjoying the warm atmosphere, good company and the chance to catch up with neighbours and friends.
A highlight of the morning was the series of short speeches delivered by local residents, who shared personal stories about their lives and aspirations in Australia.
Guest speaker Jane Worsely-Allott captivated the crowd with her reflections on her journey after moving from London to the area 30 years ago, speaking about her experiences in fashion and her appreciation for Australian life and the local community.
Other speakers on the day included Terri Dean, Louise Bibby, Lynette Bibby, Peter Yuille, Amy Greenaway, Dawn McKay, Janeane Edwards and Dianne Grant. Together, they painted a picture of life in Navarre, emphasising the strength, care and nurturing nature of the local community and the importance of country living.
The Australian flag was proudly raised by Jonathan Scott, followed by the national anthem, which was sung with enthusiasm by those in attendance.
As the morning drew to a close, Leonie Bibby thanked the many people who contributed to the success of the event.
She acknowledged the Northern Grampians Shire Council for its Australia Day Grant, the Navarre Museum and its committee for hosting the event, and the volunteers who assisted with cooking and set-up.
She also thanked all speakers and acknowledged the attendance of Councillors Hide and Greenberger, along with Mayor Karen Hyslop, who arrived later in the morning.
It was a brilliant and memorable Australia Day celebration enjoyed by all who attended.
