The GAT - the General Achievement Task - was postponed for a second time this year, moving from July 29 to August 12, pending further public health advice.

The GAT, a requirement for VCE students to test numeracy and literacy skills, was postponed due to the extended statewide lockdown.

Marian College Acting Principal Matthew Summers said the postponement gave the school the opportunity to ensure the test is done as safe as possible.

"It's an unavoidable situation that we're just going to have to deal with," he said.

"It allows us some time to safely prepare for the GAt to take place under current restrictions."

Mr Summers said the year 12 students are keeping up with their work and engaged online.

"Hopefully we'll be back on site next week and we'll get a real gauge of where they are at with their studies given the interruptions they have had."

The Minister for Education, James Merlino said Victorian students have the support they need given the circumstances.

"Victorian students have done an amazing job adapting to another year of disruptions to their learning - and we're making sure every student is assessed individually and fairly in their final years of school," he said.

"The Delta variant of coronavirus is causing uncertainty right around Australia - but we want to make sure every student knows that no matter how much they're impacted by the pandemic, we're supporting them to succeed in VCE and VCAL."
