A severe weather warning for damaging winds has been issued by the Bureau of Meteorology with much of Victoria's west expected to be hit.

Horsham, Mildura, Swan Hill, Warrnambool, Portland as well as the alpine area of Falls Creek are all expected to be hit by the strong winds across Friday evening and Saturday morning.
Bureau of Meteorology senior meteorologist Christopher Arvier said they are expecting winds to reach up to 90km/h across the next 24 hours.
"It is going to be a very windy day across Victoria, there is currently severe weather warnings for alpine regions as well as Western Victoria," he said.

"Through Western Victoria we are expecting to see sustained winds of between 40km/h and 60 km/h with peak gusts of up to 90km/h.
"We are likely to see the strong winds throughout the afternoon and evening, but the time we will see these peaks gusts will be overnight.
"We are expecting very strong north-westerly winds with the strongest winds to be in the afternoon and evening and continue into the early hours of Saturday morning."

Snow is also expected for parts of the Grampians as the coldest of the front hits.
"Snow level currently at 1300 metres, dropping to 900 metres and then dropping to 600-700 metres on Saturday morning," Mr Arvier.
The Bureau expects conditions to ease, but remain cold and damp later on Saturday.
