Councillors unanimously carried a motion to set their allowances at $21,049 per annum and the mayor's allowance at $62,884.
Local Government Victoria places councils into three categories based on their by their size and population.
The Ararat Rural City Council is a category one council, meaning councillor allowances must be between $8,833 and $21,049 per annum.

However, the council's decision to set their allowances at the maximum its category allows is standard practice. Northern Grampians Shire councillors have elected to do the same at their most recent meeting.
Councillor Peter Beales reiterated this as he moved the motion at Tuesday's meeting.
"It's the same decision that was made by the last council and the council before that," he said.

Cr Beales also noted that councillors would soon no longer be tasked with setting their allowances.
"At the moment we're stuck with this decision. Next time it comes around it will be delegated down by the state government and there will be an independent body these allowances," he said.
The proposed allowances were put on public exhibition, but no submissions were received.
