Ararat residents are being encouraged to take precautions when conducting burn-offs this fire season.

Last month was one of the wettest January's on record, however, Ararat Rural City Council chief executive Dr Tim Harrison said there is no room for complacency.
"As warmer weather continues, so does the risk of fire and it is extremely important that everyone remains diligent," he said.
"Preventative measures are our first defense against bush fires, and there are a number of ways that you can safely check your past fires and mitigate risks when burning in future."

These measures include checking if the burn pile is still hot by pouring water on it and seeing if any steam rises.
Clear away the surface material and watering the exposed materials to extinguish any remaining embers.
Monitor the fire at all times with an adequate supply of water nearby.
Register the burn off with the Emergency Services Telecommunications Authority on 1800 668 511 (available 24/7).
Read the council rules for burn-offs in the area, and contacting the local CFA brigade if there are any further issues.
Permits for burn-offs can be applied for at firepermits.vic.gov.au/.
Council is also available to provide information on burn-offs and fire safety.
