A high pressure system is moving to the south of Victoria and will bring "damaging easterly winds" to parts of southern Victoria and the Grampians as well as the eastern suburbs of Melbourne, Port Phillip and the Surf Coast.
Wind speeds averaging 40 to 60 km/h with peak gusts of 80 to 90 km/h are forecast, with the strongest gusts around Melbourne and most likely to occur around midnight.

Winds are mostly expected to ease by Thursday morning, however strong gusts may continue to be experienced around Wilsons Prom and Cape Otway during the day on Thursday.
The State Emergency Service advises that people should avoid travel if possible if driving conditions are dangerous, check that loose items such as outdoor settings, umbrellas and trampolines are safely secured, move vehicles under cover or away from trees and stay away from fallen powerlines.
Another weather warning update is expected at 5pm.
