The environmentalists initiated conversations with their parents after two cygnets were reported to have been tangled in fishing line left at the lake.
On a trip to the gardens on Saturday, Delilah asked her mother Annie Brown if she could pick up some rubbish before playing at the playground.
"I helped clean up the lake to help all the other cygnets survive because one died," Delilah said.
"It made me sad.
"I really like them because they are cute."
Ms Brown said the gardens were a wonderful place for the children to explore.
"We are so lucky that the area is so well maintained by the Council - they do a terrific job," she said.
"I'm really proud of the kids for doing their bit in helping out the community."
