Emergency services crews were called to the site of the old Prestige Mill, coroner of Lowe and Queen Street Ararat.
Country Fire Authority District 16 officer Wayne Hirth said crews from Fire Resuce Victoria Ballarat supported CFA brigades from Ararat, Moyston and Great Western.

"There was a stop put in just after 9pm on Sunday evening," he said.
"It took about four hours - without knowing more details you could assume it was a considerable size.
"Being an old building there would have been concerns with asbestos on site. The necessary precautions by the responding brigades would have been taken."
An police officer from the Ararat Criminal Investigation Unit confirmed the site was under investigation and anyone with any information was to contact the Ararat station or Crimestoppers on 1800 333 000.
