For candidates completing the training it will remain valid through the general election and any by-election. Candidates will need to make a declaration of participation to the Victorian Electoral Commission. The training will be delivered online and administered via Local Government Victoria. Links to the training can be found through the Ararat Rural City Council website www.ararat.vic.gov.au from the week commencing August 3.
All prospective candidates for election must complete the training before they will be allowed to nominate to stand for election with the Victorian Electoral Commission.
Ararat Rural City Council CEO Dr Tim Harrison said the training should assist prospective candidates to understand eligibility requirements, the role of Councillors and the commitment required. "It will help people considering standing for Council to understand whether it is for them or not," he said.
The content will likely include; eligibility to run, time and commitment, responsibilities of government, role of Councillor (obligations), Code of Conduct and Oath of Office, role of a CEO (and council staff), election campaign donations, conflict of interest, legislation and council policies, confidentiality and entitlements including allowances and support. Anyone considering standing for Council at the October Election, who does not have access to the internet for online training, is encouraged to use the facilities at the Ararat Library. You can make a booking by calling 5352 1722.
