Koalas have had a hard time of it lately, so it was nice to see this piece of news from NSW's mid North Coast.
A big koala project is underway in Port Macquarie-Hastings council which aims to capture the essence of the region and celebrate its place as the koala capital of the world.
The Port Macquarie News' Tracey Fairhurst reported The Hello Koalas project was in its infancy and would include the commissioning of two 2.5-metre tall koala sculptures for placement at key locations.
One of them, would be at a new tourism precinct that would include a wild koala breeding sanctuary managed by the Port Macquarie Koala Hospital.
Which, after a summer of bushfires that threatened the species further, is great news.
The public art project, which comes under the umbrella of Arts and Health Australia, is being directed by Margret Meagher, who hopes to have the big koala unveiled at the 2020 Hello Koalas Festival on September 26-27 in Port Macquarie.
Local artists will be commissioned to paint the sculpture, and the fibreglass model will be poured by John Belfield, who has been instrumental in the creation of the koalas featured along the popular sculpture trail.
It'll be great to see the finished results, and have another "big thing" for tourists to add to the list of "must-sees" from Australia's already large collection.
