GERMAN supermarket giant Kaufland is withdrawing from the Australian market, putting an end to plans for a new supermarket in western Victoria.
The company said in a statement on Wednesday that it was concentrating on its European core markets for "the foreseeable future".
Acting CEO of Kaufland International Frank Schumann said the decision was not taken lightly.
"We always felt welcome in Australia. We would like to thank our employees and we apologise for the disruption this decision will cause," Mr Schumann said.
In its statement on Wednesday Kaufland said the future of the company's existing Australian investments, including properties purchased for retail outlets and distribution infrastructure, would be discussed with parties in coming days.
