Hanging up the sneakers, Freeland has called time on a career which spanned seven seasons over 22 years.

Freeland, 40, said he loved playing basketball because it was the greatest game in the world.

"It's become too big of a commitment to travel halfway around Victoria for weekends at a time," he said.

"It's time to take a backseat and now, my children's interests need to take priority.

"We can add in the fact I pull up a bit sore on Sunday or Monday if we play two games. I was no good at the doubleheader weekends."

Freeland began his CBL career with the Stawell Pumas in 1997.

"It was the CBC back then and I travelled right across the state to play," he said.

"I did a pre-season at the Horsham Hornets when they were playing in the VBL but didn't play. I decided to stick with football. I regret the decision. I was about 27 then and right in my prime. I should have stuck with it."

Freeland said he enjoyed the "oohs and aahs" from the crowd - especially those from his family who go along and support him playing.

"It keeps me going during the game," he said.

"To play my final CBL game in front of my wife Erin and the kids was pretty special.

"The decision to retire came after about a month into the season."

Freeland said the 2019-20 season was tough, both on and off the court.

"As a new committee, we are learning as we go and a lot of players had never played at this level, which showed," he said.

"We did well with getting sponsors back on board this year which we're so thankful for. We can't keep going without their help and support.

"It was also great to see the crowd come out to watch and support us every game.

"It has certainly set a platform for next year. We can start planning earlier with the foundations in place to know what are the key focuses for next season."

Freeland said he would remain an integral part of the Stawell Wildcats' committee in the future.
