AFL Wimmera-Mallee's Stephen McQueen confirmed there are ongoing discussions for state-wide change to the current interleague system.
Mr McQueen could not specify what the changes might be.
"We've heard rumours of interleague being a different structure moving into the future," Mr McQueen said.
"Both our leagues (the Wimmera league and Horsham District league) are considering their options on the limited information that we have at the moment."
It is understood any changes to the current system would come into place in 2021. Speculation is rising that a structured interleague competition might not go ahead in 2020.
Wimmera Football League commissioner Trevor Albrecht said it would be a shame for the current system - which has existed for four seasons - to be abandoned.
The Wimmera league's Community Championships ranking rose to 12 out of 30 participating leagues after victory against the Murray league this year.
"We will be bitterly disappointed if the old system is gone ... I feel we were one of the few leagues that were always prepared to have a real dip at it," Mr Albrecht said.
"We were rapt with where we got to (in the rankings). We got to 12th, and wanted to push into the top 10."
Mr Albrecht said other leagues sometimes struggled to convince their best players to travel large distances for a one-off interleague match.
"We've done the big trips while a lot of other leagues didn't want to travel," he said. "If they had a road trip they couldn't get commitment.
"We never had that issue with our players."
Mr Albrecht however said he was not a fan of the often-proposed alternative of only competing against nearby leagues.
"A close-by rotation with say, only four leagues and playing them once every four years, I think that gets a little bit monotonous," he said.
"You know what your neighbours are doing. I think the beauty of the old competition was we didn't know much about our opponents, before doing our homework."
Wimmera league's 2019 interleague coach Guy Smith said he was also a fan of the existing system.
Smith - who now coaches Edenhope-Apsley in the Horsham District league - however said an interleague clash between nearby leagues would be enticing.
"I'd be excited for a Wimmera league against District league match," Smith said.
"There is always that bit of conflict between the two leagues, with debates about which is better and that sort of thing.
"It would be great for spectators and supporters."
