The premiership-winning coach will take the helm of the club's A Grade and B Grade sides in 2020.
"I'm really excited. Last season I couldn't really commit too much, because I was travelling and planning to move away," Cannane said.
"It's nice to know what I'm doing and be able to settle and I'm really excited to coach again. We have a very young and talented list and from the brief conversations that I've had with the girls it's looks like we'll have most of the same team moving forward, which is even more exciting.
"We've already started to breed a nice culture and it will be nice to be back in control of that."
Cannane served as a co-coach in the Saints' 2017 premiership season, before stepping into junior coaching roles. She said the early appointment would help the Saints' preparations for next season.
"A few years ago it was something we thought about after Christmas and we were finding out very quickly that we missed the boat and girls were already starting to make decisions about where they were playing," she said.
"It's definitely a step in the right direction to start contacting girls to see how we can go from a recruitment side, and also from a retainment side too."
It's hoped the dual role will help create cohesion between the two sides.
"For the last few years we've been trying to develop a bit of an A and B (Grade) squad and try and rotate the girls through that, similar to what you see in football," Cannane said. "So, I think it makes sense to have the same coach for both of those sides, to oversee all of it."
