The defender had her priorities aligned elsewhere, but changing circumstances has meant she's spent plenty of time in the Demons' colours this season.
"At the start of the season, I was planning to be playing basketball, but that didn't work out. So, I came back to netball, and that's going really well at the moment," McKenzie said.
"I didn't know how I 'd go. I played (netball) in Ballarat in year 12, so two years ago, and hadn't played for about 18 months.
"I still had all the ball skills from basketball, but just didn't have that netball mindset."
McKenzie said she was nervous, stepping back into the A Grade environment.
"At the start, I didn't think I was up to it. I looked at the other girls in the team and thought they were amazing, and I just didn't think I was up to that standard, because I hadn't played for a while," she said.
McKenzie said she was looking forward to the challenge against a potent Minyip-Murtoa attack.
"It will be a really good matchup, and they have really good goalies," she said.
"Georgia (Hiscock) and I work really well in the ring. We've grown on each other, and we communicate really well, which is good.
"It is exciting coming up against really good goalies because it is a good test for us and we'll learn a lot from it."
