Safer road is needed
MAJOR Road Projects Victoria, formerly VicRoads, needs to stop mucking around and get on with building a road that's safer, cheaper, and quicker to make - and that's the northern option.

As daily travellers on this highway,we all want a safer road.
I live right on the current Western Highway and for me, the proposed route would be better, taking traffic and noise away. But I am voting and supporting the northern option for a quicker, safer route, that will cost us all much less, and be less destructive on our beautiful landscape.
There will be less hold-ups to traffic for roadworks, due to less excavation.
As far as safety goes, no-one has even mentioned the huge banks of fog that cover the landscape on the proposed route over the autumn and winter period, whereas the current highway is fog-free.
This in itself is a huge safety factor for early morning travellers.
Major Road Projects Victoria is to blame for the hold-up as they continue to mislead, misrepresent, misconstrue and refuse to listen or compromise. They keep amending their own plans anyway, so why not go with the plan that's been offered them - approved by three independent engineers.
Follow the northern route.

Voice on volunteering
WIMMERA residents are encouraged to share their experiences and ideas about community life and volunteering in the region, to help develop Victoria's new volunteer strategy.
I am inviting everyone to participate by taking a survey that will help inform the strategy, and better support the state's fast-changing and growing volunteering sector. The strategy will also be informed by workshops, roundtables, and meetings in regional areas right through to May 2020.
The state government has invested $500,000 to support volunteering initiatives over two years in the 2018-19 Victorian Budget, including digital literacy and leadership training programs.
This year, the Premier's Volunteer Champions Awards received a record number of 245 nominations for awards that recognise the hard work and dedication of volunteers in communities across the state.
Many thousands of Wimmera residents participate in formal volunteering activities each year, with many others contributing through informal volunteering.

Show good sportsmanship
WITH the arrival of springtime, I'm looking forward to the Wimmera league finals series and cheering on the mighty Burras. I am also reminded of a letter to the editor (Wimmera Mail-Times of October 5, 2018) following the A Grade netball grand final.
The writer was "totally shocked and extremely disappointed in the behaviour of ... supporters..." and added that they had "never witnessed such bad sportsmanship".
I was in total agreement with the comments and in coming weeks, urge all supporters to play fair with their passion.
