Australian Meteor Reports' David Finlay said the group had received widespread reports of a sonic boom around Horsham, Balmoral, Hamilton and Casterton around 8.27pm.
"We have received a piece of really good security camera footage, so we are putting the call out for anyone with more footage or photos of the event to help triangulate where the object came down," he said.
Mr Finlay, an astronomer based on NSW's South Coast, said the meteor appeared to be heading west.
"I firmly believe it made it the ground for two reasons," he said.
"It flares up brightly, and when it's doing that it means the meteor is fragmenting into smaller pieces that will shower the ground. But the video shows the main object then continues on and it slows down enough to stop vaporizing.
"Victoria is a unique state where there is not as much light pollution as NSW, and a lot of people go out and photograph stars and the milky way. I'm relying on these sorts of people to get back to me with these photos so we can figure out a trajectory.
It follows a meteor being spotted travelling west over the Grampians on February 8.
Mr Finlay said he initially believed fragments from this earlier extraterrestrial object made it to ground.
"Now we don't think that event was quite big enough for that to happen," he said.
"Some additional information we've received suggests it may not have been as large as what we thought. From the footage we've received so far, it looks like this one's pretty big however."
Mr Finlay said Wimmera residents with footage could head to Australian Meteor Reports' facebook page.
