Police are warning community members to be wary of phone scams claiming to be from government authorities following several recent cruel incidents.

A middle-aged man sent more than $7000 in the post on Friday morning, believing he had received a call from the Australian Federal Police.
"The people on the phone informed him he owed $7000. They then told him they would put money into his account so he gave them his account details," First Constable Jill Morgan said.
"They then gained access to his computer. He withdrew $7000 in cash believing it wasn't his money and posted it to New South Wales.
"Hopefully we can track it in the post."
First Constable Morgan said this instance is unfortunately not a unique one.
"A few months ago a young guy in his early 20s got a scam call claiming they were from the ATO, telling him to go to Target and buy $3000 worth of iTunes gift vouchers," she said.
"The thing about these situations is people get scared - you hear where they are claiming to be from and they believe it."
First Constable Morgan said calls claiming to be from agencies like the AFP or ATO asking for money are nearly always scams.
"The advice is don't give details over the phone, these government organisations will usually send something in writing," she said.
"Just hang up if you are suspicious and if any threats for warrants or money is made, come to the police and we can assist."
