Darren Maddern is now a member of the eight-person board for VAS, while Daniel Taylor is now the chair for horse committees for all of Victoria.

Mr Taylor said his role involved overseeing the regulations and continuation of the horse sections of the shows.

"We have also both been elected to the saddle horse championships committee," he said.

"We would like to see the numbers increase at the shows, with initiatives like more prizes to ensure the continuity of our horse sections. Horses are a bit of a dying breed and we need to see the young ones coming through."

Both Mr Taylor and Mr Maddern are from fifth generation showing families. Mr Taylor said they were keen to make agricultural shows about showcasing the best their community had to offer.

"Whether's its from Kaniva where we breed a lot of sheep and do cropping, to Ararat where it's more about the (Gum San) Chinese heritage museum, it's to overall attract new flare and enthusiasm around that particular area's products and services," Mr Taylor said.

"Every town and community has something different they can take advantage of.

"Back in the day farm wives would cook their cakes to show the best of what they can do, and I think that in some respects that has been lost. The Royal Agricultural Society of Victoria is looking to bring some tradition back, and so that's sort of our idea as well, to get things back to the way they were but to make them relevant (to their area).

Mr Maddern said the duo were elected at a meeting in Camperdown in Victoria's south west, when Murtoa's Claire Bibby and Warracknabeal's Jean Wise stepped off the board.

"In the past there has been at least one Wimmera representative on the board, so it's important to have someone there so you can put forward the Wimmera issues, otherwise VAS might not find out about the regional problems," he said.

It comes after the Minyip Agricultural Society disbanded in late May due to the age of the committee members among other factors.

There are 16 Agricultural shows in the Wimmera each year, including in Horsham, Donald, St Arnaud, Kaniva, Hopetoun, Ararat and Goroke.
