A Stawell man who set fire to rubbish in his backyard during the fire danger period has faced court.

Trevor Kelly, appearing before Stawell Magistrates' Court on Tuesday, pleaded guilty to lighting an open fire during the fire danger period.
The court heard Kelly lit the fire on April 19 at his Centenary Court property.

"He started with sticks and branches in his backyard and proceeded to add pieces of foam from a couch to the fire," Police prosecutor Leading Senior Constable David Cosgriff said.
"This occurred during the fire danger period of October 29 to April 30 - which was not permitted.
"He made full admissions and said he was just cleaning his yard."
Magistrate Peter Dunn issued Kelly with a $350 fine.
