Investigators have been told a man and woman were in a vehicle when they became involved in an altercation near the intersection of Minton and Hewitt streets sometime between 9am and 10am.
A mobile phone was thrown from the passenger side of the vehicle before the car came to a stop near a park on Hewitt Street.
The woman was allegedly assaulted both verbally and physically outside the vehicle.
A 50-year-old man has since been charged in relation to the alleged incident. He has been remanded to appear at Ararat Magistrates' Court on July 8.
The vehicle is described as a green 1999 Mazda wagon.
Investigators are calling witnesses to the incident.
In particular, they believe a woman, described only as having grey hair, may have been standing in the vicinity at the time.
Police are urging the woman, and anyone else with information, to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or submit a confidential report online at www.crimestoppersvic.com.au.
