Director Pam Wright said about 180 people attended opening night, and a similar number attended the Sunday matinee.
"We had a terrific opening night," she said. "The theatre was pretty full."
The famous story of love, death and revolution was performed with gusto and heart by the cast of locals.
"We had a standing ovation yesterday which was wonderful," Mrs Wright said. "At the end of the performance so many people were in tears - it was really heartfelt."
The show was a "mammoth" challenge to take on but one that the cast and crew were equal to.
"I think people are coming and thinking 'oh well, 'let's hope they can do this'," Mrs Wright said.
"It's a mammoth show for a regional group and they have done us proud. It's very hard to tell a story through music and act at the same time."
There are six more shows, with tickets are available at the door, but sales will be cash only.
