Young farmers with an interest in developing their knowledge and businesses are being urged to apply for the scholarships.

Successful applicants will be awarded a $30,000 bursary for study on a topic relevant to their business and industry.

The process for scholarships includes an application and interview process.

Culla farmer Anthony Close was awarded a Nuffield Scholarship last year, focusing on how merino can once again play a central role in the Australian agriculture industry.

Since being announced as a Scholar in September, Mr Close has travelled to the USA to tour cattle and spinach producers' facilities, to Brazil to meet with agribusiness owners and to the Overijssel province in the Netherlands.

Past Wimmera Nuffield scholars include Michael Craig of Harrow in 2015, Dean Johns of Dooen in 1999, Steven Hobbs of Kaniva in 2003 and David Jochinke of Murra Warra in 2006.

Former Member for Mallee Andrew Broad was also awarded a scholarship in 2006.

Nuffield chairman and 2000 Scholar Andrew Fowler said there was still time for producers to lodge an application.

"We encourage farmers with a passion for their industry, or the drive to take their agricultural career to the next level, to apply for a 2020 Nuffield Scholarship," he said.

"Successful recipients will embark on a 16-week global travel program over an 18-month period, where they will delve into their chosen study topic and connect with an amazing network of people who share their passion.

"There is no such thing as a right or wrong study topic. Our scholarships exist to unearth raw and real talent in Australian agriculture, and to provide the building blocks for sectorial growth."

Interim Nuffield Australia chief executive and 2013 Scholar Jodie Redcliffe said the program acted as a springboard for growth for individuals, businesses and agricultural industries to flourish.

"Over an 18-month period, Nuffield Scholars embark on a global study program, undertaking 16 weeks of individual and group travel to delve into their chosen study topic," she said.

Successful applicants will be announced during the Nuffield Australia National Conference in Brisbane, between September 17 and 19.
