It's not every small rural town that can boast an art event that attracts up to 1000 people per year and showcases a range of artwork drawn from all over Victoria and interstate. Yet this is exactly what is happening every year in Beaufort over the long weekend in June.

Now entering its 14th year, the annual Pyrenees Art Show, jointly sponsored by the Pyrenees Arts Council and the Rotary Club of Beaufort, has become a much anticipated event in the region's calendar.
Attracting a wide range of entrants across many different media, the art show is highly regarded for both the quality of paintings and the photographic display which is held concurrently
Arts Council president Heather Featherston believes the continuing success of the event lies in its tried and trusted format which appeals to city and country folk alike.
According to Heather, visitors are drawn to the variety of art and the opportunities the exhibition offers for exposure of the artist's work to a wider population.
"Many visitors comment on the excellence of the art and are surprised to find such diversity in a small country town art show," she said.
"There is definitely a range of high quality artwork to be seen in all the various categories and judges often find it difficult to single out just one winner in some sections."
Additionally, many notable art experts have performed judging duties at the show, including the curators of both the Ararat and the Ballarat galleries. With numbers passing through the door steadily increasing each year, there is little doubt that the event has a substantial following and offers something for everyone.
"Our show opening night is always a sell-out with attendees that include artists, residents from the local community and visitors to the region," Ms Featherston said.
It is at this event that judges announce awards and distribute prizes.
The show continues throughout the weekend with the $5 entry fee including a delicious devonshire tea, supplied by the Beaufort Guides.
Visitors to this year's art show can combine a cultural visit with a culinary experience in any of Beaufort's fabulous eating establishments, and a walk around the town will delight for those with an interest in old wares, historic buildings and quirky op shops.
The art show opens on Friday, June 7 and continues over the Queen's Birthday long weekend, closing on Monday afternoon.
