"Colour kids" as they are known, have been appointed every year. In 2019, 16 children will help the committee deliver the coloured silks from the runners back to the starting line.
Stawell Athletic Club officer manager Wendy Hopwood said it was a great opportunity for Stawell children to be part of the event.
"All the kids love it, they have a really good time and the athletes really show their appreciation towards the kids," she said.
"We've gone back through the record books and found colour kids were listed as early as 1956. I'm sure there would have been others earlier than that."
Mrs Hopwood said the colour kids play an important role at the event.
"Some move the blocks from the starting lines for the athletes while others are running the coloured silks from one end to the other," she said. "They all play a part in making the event run smoothly."
Each colour kid is given a shirt, top and drink bottle.
