Sergeant Silas Stephens, of Stawell, said authorities were called about 3.30pm.
"They were attempting to scale Elephants Hide," he said.
"When they've tried to return, they became lost and unable to find their way down.
"They contacted Triple Zero, whereby police from Stawell and the Stawell SES have responded."
Emergency personnel were able to locate the family.
"Police responded and entered with the SES on Mackey's Peak trail," Sergeant Stephens said.
"There were no injuries and they were returned to Halls Gap safe and sound."
