Now that is not to say that the community owns us, but it does mean that there are certain responsibilities and expectations that we should be aware of.
Firstly, for a community to be happy and healthy it needs workers - people who freely give of their time for the benefit of others and do so without complaint or the expectation of reward or compliment.
These people are the backbone of a healthy society.
Interestingly these people are normally the happy people of our society and they are this way because they are contributors not takers.
Secondly, a healthy community needs a well-established Plan B.
... there are many ways to show your community spirit. A hug or a kind word when appropriate can be so beneficial to all concerned and likewise the words "are you O.K.?" or "can I help you".
This plan is collectively available to support us when the going gets a little tough or we enter uncharted waters.
Elderly people often need a little extra support and that support frequently comes from the organisations that they once supported or were physically involved in.
I experienced first hand the benefit of a caring community, when in 1974 I lived in Darwin and the city was wiped out by Cyclone Tracey.
People went to Plan B and began to work with and for each other, and in the midst of great tragedy great bonds of kinship were established.
The same can be said for what has happened in Christchurch, New Zealand. On a local basis the Grampians bush fires were a fine example of healthy communities working together in times of need.
Finally, there are many ways to show your community spirit. A hug or a kind word when appropriate can be so beneficial to all concerned and likewise the words "are you O.K.?" or "can I help you?".
To families when was the last time you shared the words "I love you" or "I am so proud of you"?.
At City Heart Church of Christ Stawell you will hear these words often and you will do so because we are a strong and committed family of believers.
Remember you are a special human and as humans, we do need positive reinforcement from time to time.
Align yourself with the community in which you live and with a good bible-based church. Contributor, detractor, valued or unknown, who are you and who do you wish to be?
