In a Victorian first, 120,000 golden perch have been stocked into Lake Bellfield, Malmsbury, Coliban, Lauriston, Tullaroop and Barkers Creek Reservoirs to improve native fishing opportunities.
Victorian Fisheries Authority developed the stocking plan together with the peak angling body VR Fish at meeting earlier this month.
"We're not slowing down on our plan to stock 10 million fish per year by 2022, making this an exciting time for fishing in Victoria," fishing and boating minister Jaala Pulford said.
"We're confident these stockings will be a game changer for these waters, creating better fishing all year round."
Stawell and District Angling Club president Ray Howard said while he welcomes the stocking boost, more needs to be done for fishing in the area.
"We have had an issue with lack of stocking for some time - so it is something that needs to be addressed not just at Bellfield but other waterways too," he said.
"There is also a bit of a lack of access at Bellfield at the moment which can be improved.
"Fishing is a multi-billion dollar industry. We have got Halls Gap which is the heart of our tourist industry and Bellfield is a five minute drive from it. There are huge potential tourism benefits."
