THE first of several consultation meetings with key user groups over the Alexandra Active Corridor development was held Monday evening. The area comprised of Alexandra Oval, the Alexandra Gardens and the Bill Waterson Skate Park is being upgraded to include: The development is jointly funded by the Ararat Rural City Council and the state government, with community fundraising also contributing. Hosted by Ararat Rural City Council, the event was the first of several opportunities for user groups to have input on a number of items still in the draft stage. Those included the surfacing of the netball courts, the placement of the lighting around the gardens and skate park, and the lay-out of the bouldering wall to be installed in the skate park. "We've got a lot of money to spend and we've got to make sure we spend it the best way we can," he said. "It's got to be part of a big conversation with the community." The primary discussion centred around the type of surfacing the netball courts should have. Participants were split into groups to discuss the issue and deliver a consensus to the rest of the room. Asphalt was a popular choice, and some groups mentioned flexi-pave as another option. Some of the considerations were slipperiness, particularly during the wet months, upkeep and maintenance, and impact on the joints of the players. Related: Funds to light Ararat. Another forum will be held in six weeks to discuss other aspects of the project, but they were touched on during Monday's event. Some of those were whether the lighting on the courts would cast shadows from spectators, whether Alexandra Avenue - where the skate park is located - would be paved, and what shelter options existed for netball players in inclement weather. two new netball courts,
female-friendly amenities at the oval,
a bouldering wall and half-basketball court at the skate park,
lighting throughout Alexandra Park and the skate park,
upgrades to Olver Stand.
