Police arrested a 45-year-old Stawell man at about 10.50pm without incident on Darlington Road on Monday evening.
He remains in custody and is assisting police with enquiries.
Stawell Police Sergeant Peter Young said he was in Ballarat Base Hospital on Monday morning.
He said the situation was handled well.
“We put a cordon in place for the safety of the public and the person involved,” he said.
“We tried to negotiate with him while we waited on resources from Melbourne.
“It was handled professionally with no injuries to anyone involved as a result.”
UPDATE 9.40pm
Victoria Police has provided an update on the situation.
“Police are currently responding to an incident in Stawell.
“Officers were called to Darlington Road shortly before 8pm following reports of a man armed with a knife.
“Police are currently negotiating with the man, with officers from the Critical Incident Response Team and Dog Squad en route.
“Darlington Road is currently closed between Walker and Park streets.
“The investigation is ongoing.”
UPDATE 9.15pm
Police remain at the scene, with the section along Darlington Road between Woods and Walker streets still blocked off.
More than four police vehicles are in attendance.
Earlier 8.30pm
Police have blocked off a section of Darlington Road, Stawell on Monday evening.
At least three police vehicles are the the scene of an incident on the stretch of road between Woods and Walker Streets.
The incident occurred shortly after 8pm on Monday.
