A Victoria Police spokeswoman said police believed a man broke into a property on Murphy Street just after 5am and became involved in a scuffle with the occupant, a 50-year-old man.
The victim sustained minor grazes during the altercation, with the offender fleeing the scene.
Police said they believed both parties were known to each other.
It was unclear whether anything was taken from the scene.
The investigation is ongoing.
