Pomonal Singers, a sing-for-fun group, began as a community cheer-up after fire ravaged the Grampians in 2006.
The group has been running successfully for over 11 years.
The original members had been part of the Gariwerd Song Project, a series of workshops run by Fay White.
It recorded ‘Alive in Grampians-Gariwerd’, songs written by Fay, and performed at the 2006 Grampians Wildflower and Arts Show.
It was always to be a one-off.
But the song went on.
Led by Merilyn Bertram, and then Virginia Orton, Pomonal Singers continued to sing enthusiastically (if not always accurately) in the Community Hall: ácappela, or accompanied by the well-known Alan Kettle on his guitar – glees, part songs, fun songs; even the challenging world of opera.
Traditional songs have often been reset with words written by Alan, and Janice Williams.
Members have changed, but the group always retained its informal ‘everyone chips in’ style.
It has performed regularly at the annual Pomonal Carols.
The group has also performed at the WAMA campfire event and the Stawell Lutheran Christmas Tree Festival.
Everything, though, has its lifetime.
The Singers concluded with a lively performance at the Pomonal Carols on December 9.
It has been a great group, but all good things come to an end and it has served its purpose extremely well.
Perhaps its echoes will continue to linger in the hills above Pomonal, along with the bird songs.
