Sergeant Shaun Allen of Ararat confirmed that the man, 67, was hit about 5pm Thursday by the west-bound train.
He said the man had been walking along the train tracks, near the intersection of Acacia Avenue and Walker Road, at the time.
“On our arrival, a train had hit a male pedestrian,” Sergeant Allen said.
“The 67-year-old male was found deceased at the scene.
“Inquiries in relation to why he was on the tracks are continuing.”
Sergeant Allen said the man had not been formally identified.
V/Line services were impacted by the incident, with the 6.23pm Southern Cross to Ararat service terminating early at Wendouree.
Beaufort and Ararat passengers were then asked to take connecting coaches from Ballarat.
A V/Line spokesperson said alternative services were also provided the next morning for the 6.18am Ararat to Southern Cross service, which left from Bacchus Marsh.
This was due to damage to the carriages from the incident.
“We thank those passengers affected for their patience and understanding while we worked to get them where they needed to go,” the spokesperson said.
Sergeant Allen asked any witnesses to contact the Ararat Police on 5355 1500 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
Lifeline: 13 11 14.
