Ararat Rural City Council closed off both of the bridges providing access to the island, and stated that the tree posed a safety risk as other trees could fall due to root damage.
An arborist was engaged shortly after the tree fell who recommended the area be closed off including the footpath at the pool end of the gardens.
Council chief executive Dr Tim Harrison said the site will remain closed until further notice.
“It is a shame that the tree has fallen on the island at Alexandra Gardens, but there is not much we can do about nature,” he said.
“Community safety is paramount and an arborist report is being sought.
“In the meantime the island at Alexandra Gardens is being closed to the general public. My apologies to residents and visitors who might be inconvenienced during this time."
Council stated that no works will proceed until the full arborist report has been received, and that the tree will likely be recommended for removal.
