The young Ararat Rats netballer has been selected in Netball Victoria’s Northern Region Talent Academy, alongside some of the best young players in the state.
The academy is a pathway for young netballers to make their way to high-performance teams such as state and national representation.
Scott has represented various Wimmera zone and interleague teams but will now have an opportunity to put her foot forward in a level above.
As a part of the high-performance pathway, athletes are selected to trial for their nearest academy (six academy regions) at Netball Victoria’s talent identification events such as association championships and state titles.
“It was well overdue, she probably should have earned a spot last year,” Ararat A Grade and 15 and under coach Donna Spalding said.
Spalding has coached Scott both at a junior and senior level, introducing her to the A Grade team where she flourished this year, helping the Rats into the top five. She also took out the 15 and under A best and fairest award this season.
“She has shown she can play in any position, she is an all-rounder and that is something quite special,” Spalding said.
“Her reading of the play and patience is exceptional, her workrate from the start to the end of games is amazing and she is so inclusive, she brings her teammates into the game.
“As a 15 year old, she has shown maturity beyond her years.”
Scott will be part of the Northern Academy with Stawell’s Madi Taylor, while Horsham Saints’ Lavinia Fox will once again feature in the Western Academy.
Spalding said she believes Scott is the first Ararat netballer to feature in the academy in “about 10 years”.
“Racquel is getting the rewards for her effort, she is driven and deserves the opportunity she has been given,” she said.
“This girl has a lot of potential, she is one of the best juniors I have seen for a long time so I am really excited for her.
Academy members will participate in training camps as well as inter-academy competitions to increase their knowledge and understanding of the game.
