Since it was founded in 2014, Burrumbuttock Hay Runners has completed 13 successful hay runs to drought affected farmers in New South Wales and Queensland.
The group’s next drive will start on Australia Day and will head to Quilpie in Queensland.
Green Lake farmer Sam McGennisken has been collecting hay donations for the drive throughout this year. He said people had been incredibly generous.
“We ended up with about 200 rounds and had about 200 squares. The squares have all been donated up to Queensland already and the rounds will head up in January,” he said.
“There are still people up there who are doing it really tough, so hopefully this will help them with what they’re going through.”
Mr McGennisken said he was storing the hay at Wonwondah.
“People have been very generous considering the way things are down here. It’s better here, but not a lot better,” he said.
“If people still want to donate, they are more than welcome to contact me. We’re just trying to chase down what we can to make it all happen again.”
Bernard Delahunty and a group of volunteers have been busy raising funds for the hay runners in Murtoa.
Burrumbuttock Hay Runners Christmas Ball will be held at Murtoa’s Railway Hotel on December 22 from 6pm.
Mal Schier and his band Acousticus Stomp will be donating their time and playing for the evening. There will be Christmas carols earlier in the day and Santa will drop by. The family event will also include a barbecue.
Burrumbuttock Hay Runners is calling on the community for hay donations; trucks and trailers; drivers; and cash donations for its next run.
For more information about the group, head to its Facebook page or website. If you wish to donate hay to the drive, contact Sam McGennisken on 0488 219 802.
