The 38-year-old man had injuries to his upper body and an Ambulance Victoria spokesperson said he was in a serious condition.
Corrections Victoria confirmed the incident.
“Victoria Police and ambulance officers attended the scene, and the prisoner has been airlifted to hospital for further treatment,” a spokesperson said.
A Victoria Police spokesperson said police are investigating the incident.
“Police responded to an incident at a correctional centre in Ararat this morning,” they said.
“It is alleged two men, aged 37 and 38, became involved in an altercation at the Warrak Road centre just after 8am.”
The spokespeople did not confirm which hospital the man was taken to.
