About 1400 poppies were planted by year seven and 10 students on Wednesday at Soldiers Memorial Park adjacent to the Ararat RSL.
The project was inspired by a similar one at the Tower of London and concludes this year, marking each year of World War One.
The project raises funds for Ararat Legacy.
Ceramics teacher John Eagle said that students and community members had been making poppies in his classes throughout the year for the project, which had received fantastic support from the art department and wider school.
The project has raised significant funds, he said.
“In the first year about $7000 was raised for Legacy,” he said.
“They have been selling fairly steadily (since then).”
Year 10 student Jasmine Jagan said that for her the project provoked thoughts about those who served.
“I look at someone a bit older and I think about it,” she said.
The poppies will remain on display until November 18, when they will be available for ‘picking’.
Mr Eagle said that a $5 donation is suggested for a poppy but that “there is a poppy for everyone who comes and picks one.”
