On Friday it was announced the council will receive $200,000 to upgrade its e-waste collection and storage sites at transfer stations in Stawell and St Arnaud.
The Victorian government’s ban on e-waste in landfill will come into effect from July 1, 2019. The ban will place an emphasis on recycling electronic waste such as old TVs, mobile phones and computers at transfer stations or other recycling venues.
Councils will be equipped to receive discarded electronics, which will be stripped of components for reprocessing into new technology or sold on the second-hand goods market.
“This funding will ensure Victoria has one of best e-waste collection infrastructure networks in the country and we’re delivering on our promise to maximise recycling,” western Victoria MP Jaala Pulford said.
“We’re giving local councils like Northern Grampians Shire the support they need to recycle growing volumes of e-waste materials.”
E-waste can be described as anything with a plug or a battery that is at the end of its useful life.
The amount of e-waste generated in Victoria is projected to increase from 109,000 tonnes in 2015 to approximately 256,000 tonnes in 2035.
