Residents enjoyed chatting and sharing stories with the students.
The interviews were part of the Year 12 VCAL studies at the college.
The purpose of this exercise was to demonstrate an awareness of social diversity and apply strategies to improve students’ communication skills.
In order to do this, students devised a number of questions and conversation starters to learn more about the residents and the historical events they lived through, with a focus on their personal experiences and insights.
Stawell Secondary College teacher Zoe Jones explained that this information provided a wider perspective.
“Students then used their answers to write a short biography about the resident they interviewed,” she said.
“For some students this proved challenging, as they were put outside their comfort zone, and for others, it was an exciting opportunity to connect with an older generation.
“I would like to thank the residents of Eventide Homes for their time and their openness in sharing their history with our students.”
