Ms Dore will start her role as interim chief executive in October in order to replace Louise Glanville, who will start as the new managing director of Victoria Legal Aid.
Ararat Mayor Gwenda Allgood said Ms Dore had already been good for Ararat.
“She has been very fair,” she said. “She is one of those people that could be intimidating at first but once you get to know her you know she has a role to play.
“She has always been very conscious of what that role has been and is very professional about the way she goes about it.”
The role of interim chief will last for up to nine months as a thorough recruitment process is undertaken.
The new role is not expected to have an impact on her two-year appointment as the council’s municipal monitor, which will continue until August 2019.
“I’m excited to work with her over the course of the next year,” Cr Allgood said. “She has spent enough time here now that she knows Ararat well.”
Cr Allgood said the role of local government continued to change and Ms Dore would continue to play a vital part.
“What we are responsible and not responsible for changes often and Janet has a very good idea of how to steer people in the right direction,” she said.
“She’s approachable and she has been very engaged in our community. It seems to me that with everything she takes on, she knows what she is talking about.”
Minister for Consumer Affairs, Gaming and Liquor Regulation Marlene Kairouz said Ms Dore was a highly qualified senior executive with extensive experience.
“I look forward to working with her as she continues the important work of developing initiatives to minimise gambling related harm in Victoria,” she said.
“I would like to thank Louise Glanville for her work and commitment during her time leading the Victorian Responsible Gambling Foundation and wish her well in her new role.”
