Reading competed at the 2018 state school down the line shooting championships final at Echuca against the top young shooters in Victoria.
The north-west zone was well represented at the championships, competing in the 30 target single barrel final.
Stawell Secondary College’s Reading was the standout achiever from the Wimmera, shooting 26/30 to win the senior boys state title.
It was Reading’s first schoolboy state title, having finished third and second in previous years. It was an especially impressive victory, shooting through the pain of a broken nose sustained playing football on Saturday.
Kaniva’s Zoe Hawker also shot consistently to finish second in the senior girls division, scoring 24/30.
North-west zone president Colin Dunn said shooters from the region did themselves proud.
“All the students from the north-west zone performed to expectations and enjoyed the experience,” he said.
“We at the north-west zone would welcome more school and student participation in this well run competition as it helps with team and individual participation, and the safe use in an Olympic sport of firearms.”
Gemma Hill (Gippsland) was the overall winner of the day, shooting 28/30.
